From 'Sileme' to 'Demumu': The Evolution of a Safety App
Hello everyone, this is the Demumu Team.
Many early users know us by our sensational original name—"Sileme" (Are You Dead?). Yes, that name was cool, direct, and even carried a bit of dark humor. It was like a crude but caring daily greeting from an old friend: "Hey, are you still alive?"
But as our user base grew, we realized we had to shoulder more responsibility. For many solo dwellers, this app isn't just a joke; it's a profound sense of security. Today, we want to share the journey of how we got here.
Why Rebrand? A Difficult Decision
The name "Sileme" might sound too "hardcore" or even morbid to some. The decision to change it wasn't impulsive; it was based on careful consideration and extensive user feedback.
User Feedback That Moved Us
During the version 1.0 era, we received emails that kept us up at night:
"I love the function, it gives me peace of mind. But every time I see the app name, I feel an inexplicable anxiety. Is my whole life just about confirming I'm not dead?" — From a user with mild depression
"I wanted to recommend this app to my mother who lives alone, but I couldn't say the name out loud. She's elderly, and seeing the word 'death' would upset her." — From a daughter working in another city
These voices made us realize: Security should not come with fear. To allow more people—including those who are sensitive to the topic of death—to use this tool without psychological burden, we decided to upgrade our brand.
Evolution Timeline: From Concept to Service
Looking back, Demumu's growth can be divided into three stages:
- Q4 2023 (The Spark): The "Sileme" prototype was born. Just a simple countdown tool to validate the "what if" concept.
- Q2 2024 (The Conflict): User numbers surged, bringing controversy. Due to the name, we faced removal warnings from app stores. This forced us to rethink our positioning.
- Q1 2025 (The Rebirth): Officially rebranded to Demumu. Not just a name change, but a complete reconstruction of our service system.
What is Demumu? A Warmer Interpretation
"De" still retains the reverence for the ultimate question of life (Death)—this remains our original intention, reminding us to cherish every day. "mumu" represents the warmth of companionship, sounding like a pet's name or a friend's whisper.
We hope Demumu is no longer just a cold digital countdown, but an "invisible roommate" silently guarding your solo life.
Demumu 2.0: Not Just a New Name, But a Technical Upgrade
In Demumu 2.0, we introduced several hardcore technical upgrades to ensure every SOS is heard:
-
Dual-Channel Notification System: Previously, we relied on a single push notification channel. Now, we've introduced a "SMS + Email" dual-guarantee mechanism. Even in poor network conditions, critical SOS messages can be sent via the GSM network.
-
Smart Anti-Mistouch Algorithm: We optimized the logic for "countdown zeroing." Before triggering the final alert, the app attempts to wake the user with high-intensity local notifications (ringing and vibration), effectively reducing false alarms caused by simply forgetting to check in.
-
Privacy Vault: A new "Legacy" message feature uses end-to-end encryption. Your last words or important passwords are only sent to designated contacts after an emergency is confirmed. We cannot view them under normal circumstances.
The current Demumu has a more stable function and a gentler interface, but the core mission remains unchanged: To confirm your safety and call for help when you need it.
Thank you for being with us. Demumu 2.0 is here for you.
